In the U.S. culture, one of the more promising environments for ushering young men and women into adulthood is collegiate athletics. Sports allow student-athletes to engage themselves in a physical practice, cultivate their strengths, witness their weaknesses, and learn in a controlled setting about success and failure. However, many athletes focus on a very shallow aspect of this experience—mainly, winning and losing. Yet, sports can mean so much more than this in athletes’ lives. As the majority of college athletes do not end up playing professionally, there is a great need to explicitly develop generalizability and sustainability in sports—on-field lessons should be taken into the real world, encouraging athletes to create lasting change for the common good in society.
